Judson Nettleton was born in 1838 to parents John and Almira Nettleton. He was the eldest of five children. His sibling's names were Mary, Albert, Austin, and Ann. In 1860, he lived in Berkshire, Delaware County, Ohio.
On September 1, 1864, at the age of 26, Judson mustered into Company H of the 174th Ohio Infantry as a sergeant. The 174th Ohio organized and trained at Camp Chase, Ohio from August through September 1864. Judson and his regiment moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee and then to Decatur, Alabama where they served until November 25, 1864. At the end of November, they were ordered back to Murfreesboro.
On December 4, 1864, the 174th Ohio joined other units hastily gathered by Gen. Robert Milroy. They marched from Fortress Rosecrans to the aid of their comrades fighting against Confederates commanded by Gen. William Bate at Blockhouse No. 7 and along Overall Creek.
Sergeant Nettleton was wounded in the fight to drive the Confederates away. He was sent to a regimental hospital where his wounds were tended to but died seven days later.
Judson Nettleton is laid to rest in the Stones River National Cemetery in plot E-1908. He is also recorded under the last names “Nedleton” and “Niddleton.”
