Civil War divided the Hopson Family. Abolitionist Ned joined the US Army. He was killed during the Battle of Cedar Creek. His brother, a cotton merchant, fought for the Confederacy and survived the war. 

Lt. Edward “Ned” Hopson was called to front-line service for Gen. Grant’s campaign in 1864. Ned wrote letters home to his sister Caroline. His wartime letters tell of the Overland and Shenandoah Valley campaigns. They included the army's rush to defend of Washington, DC against Confederate Gen. Jubal Early’s raid
