| John N Middleton was born in 1847. With the aid of his parents, he chose to enlist September 1st, 1864 at the age of 17. He joined Company G of the newly organized 42nd Missouri Infantry which was formed at Macon County Missouri, as a private. The 42nd Missouri Infantry Regiment traveled to Sturgeon Missouri shortly after its formation and had garrison duty there until November. They were then assigned guard duty on the Northern Missouri and Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad for a time. Eventually, they made their way to Saint Louis, Missouri and Paducah, Kentucky at the end of November of 1864. In December they were sent to Forth Donelson, Tenessee and had duty there until December 30th. They were then sent to Nashville to occupy the area for a time until finally being sent to Tullahoma from January 2nd, 1865 to March of that same year. While in Tullahoma, TN, Private Middleton contracted an illness documented as inflamation of the lungs. This was likely pneumonia based on context. On February 25th, 1865, the illness took his life. John Middleton is laid to rest in plot J-3764 in the Stones River National Cemetery. |
