Michael Dunegan was a sub-contractor when the Allegheny Portage Railroad was being built and later worked at the foot of Inclined Plane No. 5 as a foreman.

In 1792, Michael was born in Ireland and worked as a farmer. He emigrated to America after his marriage to Catherine Rudden 1829. They settled in Croyle Township, Pennsylvania near where the Portage Railroad was being built. He worked on the Allegheny Portage Railroad until 1845. After moving to St. Augustine, he was involved in the lumber and agriculture industries.

Michael and Catherine had three sons. He died at 96 years old.
