Born in Ireland in 1837 Michael moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he lived until his enlistment in July 1861. In the latter part of that year, he is promoted to corporal and in May 1863 Michael is promoted to sergeant. Though the date is not definitive, sergeant Cavanaugh is killed in action on the second or third day of fighting, during the Battle of Gettysburg.
