Andrew J. McClintock, known as A.J., was born on March 12, 1841, in Bartholomew County, Indiana.

At the age of 20, Andrew enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 29, 1861. That same day, the 39th Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered in Indianapolis, Indiana. McClintock became a Private in Company F.

Private McClintock and the 39th Indiana were first sent to duty in Kentucky. Throughout his service, he marched with the regiment across Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. The 39th Indiana participated in several significant battles, including Upton’s Hill, the Battle of Shiloh, and the Siege of Corinth. In the months leading up to the Battle of Stones River, the regiment moved from Bowling Green, Kentucky, to Nashville, Tennessee, between October 16 and November 7, 1862. They remained stationed in Nashville until December 26, when they advanced to Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

On December 31, 1862, during the Battle of Stones River, Private McClintock and the 39th Indiana were positioned on the Union’s right flank at Franklin Road. Early that morning, Confederate forces launched a swift and devastating attack. Dozens of soldiers from the 39th were killed, and many were either captured or forced to retreat in confusion. Private McClintock was among those who lost his life in the early hours of December 31, 1862. He was one of 138 enlisted men from the 39th Indiana who died during their service.

Andrew J. McClintock is buried at the Stones River National Cemetery in plot N-5512.
