Matthias Beiter was twelve years old when he emigrated from to America from Germany. He worked on the Allegheny Portage Railroad. 

Beiter married Catherine Humpf and had several children. He owned 84 acres of land in Summerhill Township. He was a member of both the Wilmore Roman Catholic Church and one in Loretto. He served in the Army during the Civil War.
