William Mason was born in 1823 in Knox County, Kentucky. He later became a farmer in Vandalia, Fayette County, Illinois. At the age of 38, he enlisted July 3rd, 1861, at Vandalia, Illinois. His enlistment card describes him as 5'9 3/4" and having a light complexion with blue eyes and light hair. He was later mustered in on August 28th, 1861 in Saint Louis, Missouri into Company B of the 35th Illinois Infantry regiment as a private.

Private Mason was killed in action at the battle of Stones River on December 31st, 1862.

William Mason is laid to rest in the Stones River National Cemetery in plot D-1384.
