Mason Charles Bucklin was born on April 29, 1844, in Warren, Vermont, to Otis and Mary Bucklin. On December 11, 863, at the age of nineteen, Bucklin enlisted as a private in Company A, 8th Vermont Volunteer Infantry.

As a member of the 8th Vermont, Bucklin saw service in Louisiana, where the regiment was stationed until transferred to Virginia in mid-July 1864. Then part of Phil Sheridan’s Army of the Shenandoah, Bucklin fought on October 19, 1864, at the Battle of Cedar Creek. He was mustered out on June 28, 1865.

After the war, Bucklin returned to Vermont, pursued a career as a farmer, and married Katie Dimick on March 31, 1867. They would have one son, Eugene L. Bucklin.

In the spring of 1870 the Bucklins moved to Iowa. A devout Methodist, Bucklin contracted pneumonia and died on March 10, 1901, at the age of 56. He is buried in Highland Cemetery in Bayard, Iowa.
