John Martin was born 1842. He served as a Sergeant in Company D, 4th Ohio Cavalry. After leaving Ohio, the 4th Ohio Cavalry first went to Indiana, then Kentucky, then Tennessee. By early-mid 1862, they were in Alabama. They then split up, with six companies returning to Huntsville, Alabama, while the other four were at Bridgeport, Alabama, though the companies later reunited at Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The 4th Ohio Cavalry took part in the pursuit of Confederate General Bragg and the Battle of Stones River and most likely was still in Tennessee when Martin died on May 30, 1863, at the age of 21.

On his grave is inscribed a short poem along with the sentence “He was a good man and a faithful soldier.”

Martin is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot E-1798.
