The 13th Michigan Infantry Regiment was organized at Kalamazoo, Michigan. They mustered in in January 1862 and were immediately sent to Nashville, Tennessee. From there, they participated in the battle of Shiloh and in Nelson’s Crossroads. After Nelson’s Crossroads, they marched to Nashville, Tennessee where they remained from October 1862 –December 1862. On December 26th, however, they were ordered to march south to Murfreesboro, Tennessee. After four days of marching, they arrived in Murfreesboro and took a position just north of the Nashville Pike. It was there that they remained at the start of the battle of Stones River. The Confederate Army of Tennessee began their attacks on the Union’s right flank. The regiment had suffered great casualties in this first day of battle. It was during this first day that Private Loomis lost is life at the Battle of Stones River.
