In the final months of the American Civil War, George W. Long, a 35-year-old farmer and husband, answered the call to serve. On February 11, 1865, he enlisted as a Private in Company H of the 152nd Illinois Infantry. The Illinois descriptive muster rolls describe him as standing nearly six feet tall, with brown hair, gray eyes, and a light complexion. 

The 152nd Illinois was mustered for a one-year term, joining the Union Army’s efforts to secure vital railroads in Tennessee. After assembling in Illinois, the regiment moved first to Nashville, then to Tullahoma, where it was attached to the 2nd Brigade, Defenses Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad, Department of the Cumberland. 

Tragically, George W. Long’s service was brief. While on duty in Tullahoma, he died on March 22, 1865. His initial burial was in Tullahoma, but he was later reinterred at Stones River National Cemetery, in Plot H-2998.
