Patrick Loftus was born on March 12, 1892, in Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland. In his early twenties, he boarded the steamship Haverford and began his journey to the United States on June 23, 1914. After arriving in Philadelphia, he settled in the nearby community of Byberry, Pennsylvania.
In 1917, Loftus completed a World War I draft card describing him as medium-built, standing 5 feet 9 inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. Upon enlisting in the United States Army, he served as a private with the 153rd Depot Brigade at Camp Dix, New Jersey, where he received his initial military training before deployment. He was then sent overseas on November 13, 1918, serving with the 153rd until January 24, 1919. At that time, he was transferred to the 3rd Company, Headquarters Battalion, Army Service Corps (3 Co Hq Bn ASC), where he supported the movement of supplies, equipment, and personnel.
Loftus remained with the Army Service Corps until his return to the United States on August 4, 1919. He received an honorable discharge shortly afterward, on August 12, 1919, and resumed life in Byberry.
Details surrounding the later years of his life are limited. Patrick Loftus passed away on December 9, 1971, and was laid to rest in the Stones River National Cemetery, in plot S‑6976.
