Lawrence Hartman was a laborer on the Allegheny Portage Railroad.
Hartman was born in Prussia and served in the Prussian Army for six years. He arrived in America with his wife and daughter, both named Catherine, in early 1840. In April 1840, he was renting a home in Wsahington Township in Cambria County near the Portage Railroad and Inclined Plane No. 6. He worked as a miner before becoming a railroad employee. Once a laborer on the Allegheny Portage Railroad, he stayed until the system closed.
