Jordan served as a laborer during this first art of his service. The 9th U.S. Cavalry patrolled through South Dakota during the army's 1890-1891 campaign against the Lakota Sioux that was punctuated by the Wounded Knee Massacre. Jordan and his regiment were not at Wounded Knee, but they were the last regiment to leave the Pine Ridge Reservation at the end of the campaign.

Jordan reenlisted in 1894 and rose to the rank of sergeant while serving in Companies/Troops D and K. He received an honorable discharge in 1897. He passed away in 1947 and is buried in grave Q-6260 in Stones River National Cemetery.
