Person
Johnson, John W
John W Johnson enlisted into Company G of the 94th Ohio Infantry as a private. The Brigadier general of the 94th Ohio was General Scribner and the Division general was General Rousseau.
At the battle of Stones River, the 94th Ohio functioned as reserves in the Slaughter Pen. They received word from Rosecrans at about 9am saying that they were required at the right wing. They quickly went to aid General Sheridan's right in order to maintain the position, however after continued exhaustion of Sheridan's men and a lack of ammunition, they went to the rear. This left the other two divisions in the area isolated and unprotected. Due to the dire circumstance, they were ordered to fall back to a new line and retreated through the woods.
It was during this fighting on December 31st that Private Johnson was gravely injured. He was sent to a hospital on January 1st, but sadly passed on January 3rd, 1863.
He was buried on the battlefield, but later reinterred at Stones River National Cemetery in plot B-571.
