John A. Johnson entered service on September 13, 1862 and served as a Private in Company B, 19th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. During his service, the 19th Ohio Infantry was stationed in Kentucky and took part in the Battle of Perryville before heading to Nashville, Tennessee. They later advanced on Murfreesboro, Tennessee and took part in the Battle of Stones River. Johnson was injured on January 2, 1863 during the Battle of Stone River and died from his wounds on January 26, 1863.

He is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot E-1777.
