John Short worked on the Allegheny Portage Railroad.

He was trained as a carpenter and also worked as an engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad. John served with the Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment in Company G, Tenth Regiment. 

John married Mary Murphy and had eleven children. They lived in Lilly, Pennsylvania.
