Born John Black in New Jersey in 1842, he worked as a farmer until his enlistment in Wilmington, Delaware October 1861. John was captured in Fredericksburg and returned to duty from Camp Parole in May 1863. John died on July 3, 1863, from wounds during the Battle of Gettysburg.
