John Riffel was a train captain on the Allegheny Portage Railroad.

John was educated in Loretto, Pennsylvania. He joined the American Highlanders in the Second Pennsylvania Regiment at age nineteen and fought in the Mexican American War. He was involved in seven of the main battles. He was involved in farming and gold-mining, traveling as far as the Rocky Mountains. 

He married Margaret Allen Boland in 1876.
