| Born in Ireland, John Higgins emigrated to the United States where he took residence with his family in Smithfield Providence County Rhode Island. He worked as a day laborer until June 1, 1861 when he enlisted with the Rhode Island infantry. July 1861 he was detached to Battery A of the 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery. On July 3 1863 John was severely wounded and then captured during the battle of Gettysburg. His arm was amputated, but unfortunately, John died on July 8, 1863. His wife Ann Higgins was his sole surviving family member. |
