Jean-Baptiste married Reine Julia Janis (1763-1814) and had 5 children: Constance Elizabeth Detchmendy (1799-1836), Pierre Antoine Janis (1809-1883), Andrew Janis (1785-1872), Julia LaSource (1796-1882), and Emilie Pratte (1794-1878). Jean-Baptiste served in the Revolutionary War and is recognized as a patriot by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). In January of 1794, the Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Louisiana, Zenon Trudeau, restructured the militia in Ste. Genevieve and appointed Jean-Baptiste Janis to Second Lieutenant based on his Revolutionary War service and his local social status.
