James Funk worked for a year as a conductor on the Allegheny Portage Railroad.

He then worked in the lime business in Blair County. He operated several kilns, employed thirty-five men and shipped lime to the surrounding area. His two kilns in Frankstown were said to be the largest in America. James and his wife Susan had six children: Margaret, John S., Matilda, Nicholas G., Edward B., and Landis. After Susan died, he married Mary Dasher. They had three children: May, Ira and Nannie. He was the first Democrat as a Blair County Jury Commissioner, served as school director, and was elected Justice of the Peace and Sheriff.
