James E. Taylor worked as a sketch artist for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. His wartime drawings brought Shenandoah Valley scenes to readers at home. Leslie's Illustrated published his Cedar Creek sketches 24 days after the battle

At the beginning of the war James E. Taylor served in the 10th New York Infantry. Later he became an artist drawing scenes of the war in Virginia and West Virginia.
