Jacob Horner was assistant superintendent of the Allegheny Portage Railroad, a position he held for several years. 

Horner was a farmer and businessman. He owned boats that ran between Johnstown and Pittsburgh on the Main Line Canal. 

Jacob married Catherine and they had nine children. Hornerstown, Pennsylvania is named after the family.
