William J. Hoy was born in 1847 in Crawford County, Illinois. He entered the Union Army in 1865 at age eighteen. The Illinois Descriptive Roster recorded him as six feet tall with dark hair, dark eyes, and a dark complexion. Before his enlistment, Hoy worked as a farmer in Palestine, Illinois, and was unmarried.

Hoy joined Company H of the 152nd Illinois Infantry on February 11, 1865, at Olney. From there, the regiment organized at Camp Butler in Sangamon County and soon departed for Nashville, Tennessee. After arriving on February 20, the unit remained in the city for several days before receiving orders to move south to Tullahoma for duty.

While stationed at Tullahoma, Private Hoy became ill. He died on June 2, 1865, from an unspecified sickness, just months after the war’s end. Today, William J. Hoy is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot H‑2943.
