David Hode served as a Corporal in Company H of the 5th Tennessee Cavalry. The 5th Tennessee Cavalry was organized on July 15, 1862. They were stationed in Tennessee when Hode died on December 5, 1862. The estimated location of his death is Franklin, Tennessee, which is where he was first interred.

David Hode was later buried in the Stones River National Cemetery in plot I-3254. His unique headstone was erected by his company in his honor.
