George Herrick was born in 1843. He served as a Private in Company B, 10th Wisconsin Infantry. The 10th Wisconsin Infantry was mustered on October 14, 1861. They were stationed in Kentucky, participated in the advance on Bowling Green, Kentucky, and moved to Nashville, Tennessee in late February. They also took part in the advance on Murfreesboro, Tennessee on March 17-19, 1862. Herrick died of disease on April 19, 1862, with the estimated location of his death being Murfreesboro.

He is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot E-1822.

The following is engraved on his headstone: "Remember friends as you pass by/As you are now so once was I/But as I am now you shall be/Prepare yourselves to follow me.”
