Harlan John Crandall was born on April 3, 1848, in McDonough, New York, to John and Mariah Crandall. On September 14, 1864, at the age of only sixteen, he enlisted as a private in Company B, 90th New York Volunteer Infantry.

Just thirty-five days later, on October 19, 1864, Harlan was wounded during the Battle of Cedar Creek. His wounds must have been quite serious, as he remained hospitalized for an entire year, eventually being discharged for disability on October 21, 1865, in Albany, New York.

On December 15, 1881, Crandall married Catherine Williams, and they had two children. Harlan Crandall died on July 16, 1920, at the age of 72, in Roosevelt, New York. He is buried in Greenfield Cemetery in Uniondale, New York.
