Robert Wilks Hanes Jr. was born on May 8, 1934 in Tennessee. He served as an Aviation Structural Mechanic (Hydraulic) Petty Officer 1st Class in the US Navy and was in a patrol squadron. Hanes fought in both Korea and Vietnam and was killed in action on September 3, 1971 in Vietnam.

He is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot R-6924.
