William Alfred Hale served in the United States Navy as an Apprentice Seaman during World War II. At the time of his death, he was stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he was assigned to duty at a naval recruitment office.

Hale died on August 12, 1942, as a result of a skull fracture. There may be some discrepency between available records and his headstone which notes his date of death as August 7. He is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in Plot P-6200.
