Joseph Guest was born on September 30, 1828, and served as a Private in Company F of the 42nd Indiana Infantry. The 42nd Indiana Infantry was mustered on October 9, 1861. After, they were sent to Kentucky, where they stayed until February 1862 before moving to Tennessee, then to Alabama where they participated in various battles.

They moved back to Tennessee, then to Kentucky, in pursuit of Confederate General Bragg and participated in the Battle of Perryville. After the Battle of Perryville, they went back to Nashville where they stayed until December 26th, 1862. They then advanced into Murfreesboro on December 30th and participated in the Battle of Stones River. It was during the first day of battle of Stones River that Private Guest died, December 31st, 1862, at the age of 34. He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Guest. 

Joseph Guest is laid to rest in the Stones River National Cemetery in plot O-6141.
