Richard Gray enlisted in the 141st New York Infantry on August 25, 1862 at Elmira, New York. He mustered into service as a private in Company K on September 11, 1862. Gray and his regiment began its service manning the defenses of Washington D.C. then moved to Suffolk, Virginia in April 1863. The regiment saw some minor skirmishing during its time occupying the Department of Virginia.
In September 1863, Gray and the 141st New York traveled to Chattanooga, Tennessee to join the army group there commanded by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. In late October Gray and his comrades supported the 12th Corps at the Battle of Wauhatchie (October 28-29, 1863). The regiment was also involved in the Battle of Missionary Ridge on November 25, 1863, but it is unclear if Gray was with them.
December 1863 records list Private Gray as absent due to illness at a convalescent camp at Bridgeport, Alabama. His condition worsened and he later transferred to a hospital in Murfreesboro, Tennessee where he died from chronic diarrhea on January 19, 1864. Pvt. Richard Gray rests in plot E-1847 of Stones River National Cemetery.
