Alvy I Gowland was born in West Virginia on August 25, 1929. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force (USAF) in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He received the USAF Accommodation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and 2 Bronze Stars for his gallantry in service. He died in Nashville, Tennessee on January 23, 1972.

Alvy Gowland is buried in Stones River National Cemtery in plot S-6968.
