Born George G. Plank in Germany 1834, he emigrates to and works as a druggist until enlisting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, June 1861. As of February 1863, he is assigned to serve as a hospital steward. On July 2, 1863, Lieutenant Plank is killed in action during the Battle of Gettysburg.
