Finley Fox was born on April 30, 1844, to Enoch and Juliann Fox in Palestine, Woodford County, Illinois. He lived there in his adulthood and worked as a farmer. Fox also never married. On February 11, 1865, Fox entered service with the Union Army at Olney, Illinois at the age of 20. He mustered in with Company H of the 152nd Illinois Infantry as a private. The Illinois Descriptive Muster Rolls describe him as having been 5’ 6 ¼" with a dark complexion, featuring dark eyes and hair. 

The 152nd Illinois organized and mustered at Camp Butler, Illinois in February of 1865. From there, they were attached to the 2nd Brigade, Defenses Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad, Department of the Cumberland and went to Nashville, Tennessee. Once in Nashville, they were assigned duty in Tullahoma, Tennessee to guard the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad until July of 1865. 

While in Tullahoma, Fox contracted tuberculosis, called "consumption" in his records. He succumbed to his illness on April 15, 1865, just 15 days before his 21st birthday. 

Fox is listed as being buried in an unknown grave in Stones River National Cemetery; however, he has a headstone and burial plot located at Wesley Chapel cemetery in Crawford, Illinois. The headstone located at Wesley Chapel is the stone featured as his photo.
