Ephraim was the son of Joseph and Julia Taylor. Joseph was one of the area's most active quarriers and carvers in his time. Traditionally, the art of quarrying and carving is passed from generation to generation. Joe taught Ephraim and his other children this art.

Ephraim was a skilled craftsman and quarrier who also worked as a seasonal worker at Pipestone National Monument for twenty years, becoming well known to visitors.

Ephraim's pipes have been shipped all over the world and presented to many dignitaries in the U.S. and abroad. He was featured in the book "Pipestone, A History" and in the film Calumet: Pipe of Peace. Ephraim made many personal appearances at numerous art exhibitions and demonstrations, earning high praise for his work. His commitment to quarrying and his craft, combined with his efforts in educating the next generation, helped ensure the continuation of the tradition.
