Ronald John Ensley Jr. was born on January 1, 1948 in North Carolina with his home of record being Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee. He was drafted for the Vietnam War, serving as a Private First Class in the US Army in Company B, 12th Infantry, 25th Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. He also specialized in Light Weapons Infantry.

Ensley Jr. began his tour in Vietnam on September 10, 1967. He died on November 3, 1967 during a nighttime perimeter defense as a result of knife wounds in Binh Long province, South Vietnam. He was awarded a Purple Heart and posthumously awarded a Bronze Star for outstanding meritorious service.

Ensley Jr. is honored at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. on panel 29E, line 14 and is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot Q-6760.
