Thomas J. Dunlap enlisted in Company A of the 38th Ohio Infantry on October 7, 1862. Thomas would have been between the ages of 19 and 20 at the time of his enlistment. 

On December 31, 1862, the 38th Ohio was sent to guard the Nashville Pike and Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. They defended this key location as Confederate Regiments attacked. After the first day of the Battle of Stones River, the 38th stayed in that location to keep guard on the Union Army’s lifeline.

Private Dunlap survived the Battle of Stones River and stayed in Murfreesboro after the Battle. On June 18, 1863, Pvt. Dunlap died of disease and is laid to rest in Stones River National Cemetery in plot O-5725.
