Thomas Dial, whose name also appears in records as Thomas Deal and Thomas Dill, was born in 1847, the third of five children of Ashford and Catherine Dial in Crawford County, Illinois. By the time of the 1860 United States Federal Census, he was working alongside his family as a farmer. 

As the Civil War neared its end, Dial enlisted in Company H of the 152nd Illinois Infantry on February 11, 1865. The regiment was mustered shortly afterward at Camp Butler in Springfield to serve for one year or the duration of the conflict. Within days, the unit moved south to Nashville and then on to Tullahoma, Tennessee. In March, the regiment was assigned to guard and maintain the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. 

Dial’s service ended after a little more than a month. He died of disease on March 18, 1865. 

Today, Thomas Dial rests in Stones River National Cemetery in Plot B‑578.
