Benjamin I. Demoss worked as a quarryman before serving as a Private in Company H of the 37th Indiana Infantry. The 37th Indiana Infantry was mustered on September 18, 1861. They first went to Kentucky, then moved to Tennessee in February 1862. They left Tennessee for Alabama in mid-April before going back to Tennessee to be station in Nashville. On December 26th, 1862, they participated in the advance on Murfreesboro and at the battle of Stones River from December 31st, 1862, through January 2nd, 1863. Post battle, they were stationed in Murfreesboro until June of 1863. During this time, Benjamin Demoss fell ill and died on May 4th, 1863. 


He is laid to rest at the Stones River National Cemetery in plot M-4849.
