David R. Bryan was the son of William L. and Nancy Hess Bryan. He worked on the Allegheny Portage Railroad for four years as a boat driver.

He then went on to drive a team of horses at Benscreek Furnace. He served in the Civil War for four years and started with the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry with Company K, Third Regiment. This is said to have been one of the first companies to form following President Abraham Lincoln's call for volunteers. He served for many years in several different positions including First Sergeant and First Lieutenant. 

After the war he worked as an engineer at the Cambria Iron Company in Johnstown and stayed with the company for 30 years.

He married Annie M. Wolford on July 28, 1868 and had four children.
