David Murray moved to Hollidaysburg as an infant and was a canal driver on the Main Line Canal starting at age twelve. He worked between Hollidaysburg and Pittsburgh and Hollidaysburg and Philadelphia. He held several different positions. Eventually, he owned his own boats and teams of mules.
In the 1860s he was employed by the government and helped move soliders and supplies. He worked in the boating industry for twenty years. In 1863, he enlisted with the Pennsylvania Infantry and served until the end of the war in 1865. He owned and operated the Murray House. He married Louisa Cruse and had ten children.
