Walter Issac Davenport was born on April 27, 1922 in Rutherford County, Tennessee. He married a woman named Maggie McCoy and together they had a son, James Henry Davenport. He enlisted on June 1, 1944 at Camp Shelby in Mississippi to serve in World War II. Walter was a Private First Class of Company A, 104th Division. One of his brothers, a Private William Y Davenport, also served in the war in the same region.

Walter, while fighting in a battle, died on April 17, 1945 in Germany. He was reportedly hit by machine gun fire. Walter is buried at Stones River National Cemetery in plot P-6298.
