Cyrus L. Pershing was employed as a clerk at the weighlock in Johnstown.

The Pershing's were one of the oldest families in western Pennsylvania. Cyrus moved in Johnstown in 1830. Besides being a clerk at the weighlock in Johnstown, he held other clerical positions. 

He opened a practice in Johnstown after being admitted to both the Cambria County and Somerset County bars. He went on to run for Governor of Pennsylvania and the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He was the presiding judge for the courts of Schuylkill County.

Pershing married Mary Letitia Royer on September 23, 1851 and they had seven children.
