Granville Crockett enlisted in the 17th United States Colored Infantry (USCI) that was forming in Murfreesboro on November 30, 1863. He was 25 years old, 5 feet 4 inches tall, and reported his occupation as farmer. Many of those serving in the 17th USCI were men from Murfreesboro and the surrounding area who escaped enslavement and sought refuge and employment with the U.S. Army.

Crockett and his regiment took part in the military occupation of Murfreesboro until April 1864 likely helping to guard Fortress Rosecrans and working to support the vast supply depot within. Crockett did not join the 17th USCI when they left for their next duty station at Nashville. He died while on duty at Smith Station, Tennessee on March 8, 1864. The cause Granville's death was irritation of the bowels.

Private Granville Crocket rests in plot A-185 in Stones River National Cemetery.
