Cornelius Baldwin Hite, Jr. was born at Belle Grove in 1842. He joined the Confederate Army. Hospitalized with an illness, he missed the Battle of Cedar Creek. His childhood home was a key spot on the battlefield. 

Hite deserted the crumbling Confederate Army in March 1865. After the war Hite was a teacher, surveyor, and land seller. He became an active member of organizations like the United Confederate Veterans. Hite lived to be 101, dying during the Second World War.
