Frederick Tabor Coffin was born in 1828. In his adult life he married Catherine Ann Taylor and had two children, Herbert and Zana. Frederick enlisted as a private in the Ohio 1st Light Artillery, Battery D between the ages of 32 and 33. 

The Ohio 1st Light Artillery, Battery D was organized at Camp Dennison, Ohio, September 1861. They began their military service in Kentucky before moving to Tennessee and taking part in the Battle of Shiloh and siege of Corinth. At the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, most of Battery D was captured, except for Lieutenant Natnaniel Newell's section, which included Pvt. Coffin. Coffin and Lt. Newell's section moved to Nashville, Tennessee. 

On December 26, 1862, the Union Army began the march from Nashville to Murfreesboro. Pvt. Coffin and his comrades supported Col. Robert Minty's cavalry brigade and engaged enemy cavalry and artillery along Hurricane about a mile from LaVergne. The section fired 60 rounds in the exchange and sustained just one casualty, Private Coffin.

Pvt. Frederick T. Coffin was the only member of the section to perish during the campaign. He rests in Stones River National Cemetery in an unknown grave.
