John M. Christie—sometimes recorded as John W. Christie—was born around 1846 in Harrison County, Ohio. By the time of the 1860 Federal Census, he appeared in the household of Samuel Bronning, working as a seventeen‑year‑old farm laborer. On February 11, 1865, Christie enlisted at Olney, Illinois, joining Company H of the 152nd Illinois Infantry as a Private. The regiment was organized a week later, on February 18, at Camp Butler in Springfield to serve for one year. Soon after, on February 20, the unit traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, and then continued south to Tullahoma. In March, the 152nd Illinois Infantry was assigned to guard the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad. 

While carrying out these duties, Christie became ill. According to the U.S. Register of Deaths of Volunteers (1861–1865), his condition worsened, and he died on March 28, 1865. His death was recorded as the result of chronic diarrhea, a common and often deadly ailment among Civil War soldiers. 

Today, John Christie rests at Stones River National Cemetery, where he is buried in Plot H‑2915.
