Charles was born on February 4, 1844 in Kewanne, Henry County Il. Prior to his enlistment April 1861, census information list Charles as a farm laborer. During his time serving, Charles was captured (August 8, 1862) at Second Manassas, deserted Camp Parole September 23, 1862, returning from desertion March 13, 1863. Charles was killed in action on July 2, 1863.
